Massaging directly down along the spine with a heated Thermal Palm stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the
body’s rest and repair mode. When the nervous system is calmed, pain signals to the brain are reduced. This helps the body to
recuperate from the cause of stress that results in pain.
Heat provides local and general circulation. When blood vessels dilate, the surrounding tissues receive a fresh supply of
oxygen and nutrient rich blood flow. When damaged tissues receive a supply of fresh blood, the body’s natural healing
mechanisms are greatly enhanced. Increased oxygen and nutrient rich blood is essential to the repair of soft tissue damage
caused by repetitive strain syndrome from sports, occupational and other related stresses.
Massaging with heat enhances the lymphatic drainage by stimulating lymph ducts and lymphatic pathways to open. When
lymphatic pathways open, waste products released from the tissues during massage are more easily flushed through the system.
In addition, when deeper massage techniques are indicated, massaging with heat can reduce the incident of muscle and soft
tissue tenderness the day after the massage.
Massaging with heated Thermal Palms increases skin temperature, which in turn causes local or general perspiration.
Perspiring is the body’s natural defense to cool itself and too help rid toxins from the body. This natural reaction reduces
the load of waste product removal for an already taxed lymphatic system.
When massaging with heated Thermal Palms, muscles, tendons and ligaments become more relaxed and responsive to massage
manipulations. This reduces the workload for a Therapist to achieve the desired tissue response and provides a more effective
and relaxing treatment for the patient.
Heat opens up the small capillaries of the skin, which again delivers increased amounts of oxygen and nutrient rich blood
flow to the skins surface. This increased blood flow helps to cleanse bacteria from blocked pores, sloughs off dead skin cells
and helps too replenish skin hydration.
When heat is massaged over a local region, the influx of blood flow (through vascular dilation) creates a mild and
temporary numbing effect. When increased pressure is indicated, this numbing effect can help prevent an increase in
discomfort.
When massaging with heat, respiration slows and deepens. Deeper and slower breathing carries increased amounts of oxygen to
the cells, tissues, organs and all the systems of the body. Within moments of beginning a Thermal Palms massage, the deepened
breathing can help patients to experience a deeper state of physical relaxation and a more peaceful state of mind.
When heat is indicated, body treatments are more effective with warm pliable muscles and most clients value the soothing
effects of being massaged with heat.
