HISTORY
At the end of the 19th century, Father Kneipp preached that nature had endowed man
with everything he needed for a happy, healthy and fulfilled life. He bathed in the
pure streams of his native Bavaria and developed a science of water therapy. After
curing himself of a serious case of tuberculosis – considered incurable at that time -
he began intensive work on the healing powers of water, and the healing effects of
selected plants. He immersed himself in the lore of plants and became a major figure in
botanical studies in Germany. Kneipp based his teachings on experimentation and
observation; but equally they were part of a philosophy that man had been endowed with
the bounty of nature for his use and benefit.
In 1892, Father Kneipp appointed the company which became the Kneipp-Werke to
manufacture preparations under his name. Located in Wurzburg, Germany, a Roman city
which in ancient times bore the name Herbipolis, “city of herbs” because of the
botanical richness of the region. Kneipp-Werke is now one of Germany’s important
concerns, manufacturing more than 300 botanical compounds. It is more than 100 years
of experience are fully employed in the development of each product and at every stage
of the manufacturing process.
Kneipp-Werke remain faithful to the traditions established by Sebastian Kneipp.
